I’m not super patriotic. My political views are different from most. But today has nothing to do with politics. It has to do with honoring the millions of men and women who risk, and sometimes sacrifice, their lives in the name of freedom, justice, and honor.
They are the unsung heroes that make our lives possible. Every picnic in the park, every church worship service, every family BBQ, is possible because these men and women stand up to fight for what is good and right in the world. To protect our families, our friends, our country. They are willing to pay the ultimate price, and there is no amount of gratitude that could match the sacrifices you make day after day when you put on that uniform. Thank you.
There are other unsung heroes as well: the families of these brave men and women. The wives, husbands, sons and daughters who wait breathlessly each day to know that they’re still a family. The moms and dads who take on the insurmountable task of raising a child – alone. For months at a time. You are strong beyond comprehension. Your bravery is incomparable. For your indescribable commitment to keeping our country safe, behind the scenes, I thank you.
I have family members who have fought in, and survived, some of the greatest wars in our history. I do not pretend to understand what that is like. I cannot imagine the courage and discipline and conviction it requires to face the deadliest of circumstances day after day. Today is a day set apart to remember and thank you. Having a BBQ seems a little silly in light of all you have done for us. But know that for those who are home today, celebrating with their families, we celebrate you. To those who are overseas, our prayers are always with you. To those who have fallen in the name of honor and justice, we remember and honor you and the sacrifice you made for our freedom. And to all of you who put on that uniform day after day, you look darn good in that get-up. I’m just saying. You’re not just saving the world. You’re saving the world and looking good while doing it.
And to the military moms and dads who are behind the scenes, we remember you today, as well. May you be reunited with your loved ones soon. May you bask in the joy of the family that is around you. May you be celebrated today and always, for the sacrifice you make day after day.
To all our heroes, we honor you.
